"Dr. Yunus Skilled at Doctoring, Played Role Behind Jamaat's Rise" - Kazi Montu

"Dr. Yunus has a profound influence on shaping narratives and strategies in Bangladeshi politics, which may be linked to Jamaat’s resurgence plans" – claims veteran journalist  Renowned Bangladeshi-American journalist Kazi Montu expressed deep concern about Bangladesh’s current political climate in a televised interview. His observations prominently highlighted Dr. Muhammad Yunus’s political “doctoring” and the growing influence of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir.

Below is a summary of his key arguments:  Jamaat’s Cyber Operations and Vulgar Propaganda: Montu pointed out that Jamaat-Shibir is using Facebook and other social media platforms as weapons. Their organized “cyber-troll army” is engaged in attacking opposing ideologies, spreading rumors, and creating social division. This poses a significant threat to Bangladesh’s democratic and social stability.

Jamaat’s Historical Stigma and Current Positioning: Reiterating Jamaat’s role in the 1971 Liberation War and its history of war crimes, Montu stated, “This stain can never be erased.” However, he expressed concern that through political patronage, thousands of madrasas have been established, strengthening Jamaat’s foundation. He claimed that many Shibir activists have infiltrated various institutions under the cover of student wings like the Chhatra League.

Dr. Yunus’s “Doctoring” and Hidden Political Agenda: Kazi Montu presented his most serious allegations against Dr. Muhammad Yunus. He said, “While Dr. Yunus is internationally recognized as a social entrepreneur, in Bangladeshi politics, he is an expert at ‘doctoring’—strategically presenting information and situations.” According to Montu, Dr. Yunus is directly or indirectly contributing to the rise and rehabilitation of Jamaat, and as part of a larger plan, is positioning himself for a potential “presidential” role in the future. Through this “doctoring,” he is actively shaping perceptions among international circles and the general public.

International Influence and Embassy-Based Support:  Kazi Montu alleged that behind certain international media reports—such as those in The Washington Post—on Bangladesh’s elections and politics, there is influence from some Bangladeshi staff in US embassies who sympathize with Jamaat. He described this as a form of foreign interference in Bangladesh’s internal affairs.

Pre-Election Strategic Moves: He expressed skepticism about the “targeted investigations” by the Anti-Corruption Commission and other agencies before elections, describing them as “engineered” steps aimed at achieving specific political objectives.  Public Awareness and Optimism: Finally, Kazi Montu expressed optimism, stating that the people of Bangladesh have become aware of this “doctoring” and political maneuvering. Public awareness of Jamaat’s past record and its hidden agenda, he believes, will protect the country from fundamentalist and anti-liberation forces.

Kazi Montu’s  KIRON TV interview courageously brings to light a complex and often obscured dimension of Bangladeshi politics. It is not only a political warning but also a call for the nation to stay united and vigilant in upholding the spirit of the Liberation War and secular democratic values.
