Major (retd.) Hafizuddin Ahmed, Bir Bikrom, has been appointed as the full Minister for Freedom Fighters’ Affairs, while Ishraque Hossain, son of freedom fighter Sadeq Hossain Khoka, has been appointed as State Minister for the same ministry. By placing both a decorated freedom fighter and the son of a valiant freedom fighter in state leadership positions, the BNP has clearly signaled that matters concerning the legacy of the Liberation War and the welfare of freedom fighters hold special importance for the party.
This move conveys a deliberate political message: the history, dignity, and institutional recognition of freedom fighters remain central to the party’s ideological stance. At the same time, the party has chosen to follow the constitutional path in implementing the July reform agenda (July Biplob Sangskar). By refraining from taking a separate oath to enact the reforms outside the constitutional process, the BNP emphasizes its commitment to constitutional procedures rather than symbolic or extra-constitutional gestures.
For Jamaat-e-Islami and the National Citizens Party—both of whom have consistently presented themselves as the principal leaders and architects of the August 5, 2024 political upheaval—this decision represents a major political setback. Their attempt to subordinate the spirit and historical primacy of the Liberation War to the narrative of the July Revolution has encountered institutional resistance. In contrast, the BNP’s current approach indicates a strategic effort to restore and reaffirm the history of the Liberation War in its authentic and undistorted form, resisting attempts to eclipse it under more recent political narratives.
